Faith and Endurance

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. Hebrews 12:1 NLT.

For the past several weeks, the pastors at Life Church have been focusing on the above scripture. Some thoughts have surfaced as I have meditated on this life-changing verse.

  1. We are not alone. We are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses. They are with us. Heaven is full of people who know we can run our race. They are urging us on—they did it, and so can we. In 2014, my son-in-law, Timothy Haslet, and his twin brother, David, ran the Boston Marathon for his sister, one of the bombing victims. My daughter, their children and myself all traveled to Boston to cheer them on. Because of the length of the race and the young ages of their children, we watched from our rooms, getting updates along the way. Even though they couldn’t hear us from the roadside, they knew we were there. We prayed, encouraged and celebrated their finish. For various reasons, Tim wasn’t as prepared as he should have been and needed some health support after. It cost him something to run, but they ran this race out of love and support for their sister Adrienne. My friends, when cheer others on, it is good for us as well.,

2. The Stripping Part. Let us strip off every weight that slow us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. What comes to mind when you think about excess baggage? I think about mental weights. Discouragement (both in myself and others), disappointments in ourselves and others, false assumptions (it’s too hard, I’ll never make it) and false or wrong expectations. These are some of the mind weights that have either slowed me down, or try to cause me to veer off track. I have to deal with them, or else I can’t run my race as God intends…and neither can you.

After my daughter-in-law’s cancer diagnosis in May, my life got even busier. I was already running tired, enough, so I actually had gone to my doctor to see if there was a problem. Part of my mind said, “you can’t do this”, the other part said, “you have no choice”. After a long talk with the Lord, asking for His strength and help, we began helping with the chemo journey by helping with childcare. I was determined to serve them cheerfully, not begrudgingly. I marvel at how much stronger I feel today than I did back in June. Instead of it wearing me down and out, I have more stamina! It wasn’t always easy, but we made it. The memories we made were so worth it. I had to strip off the thought that I couldn’t do it and replace it with “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. As I did, joy came, which of course strengthened me!

Another thing I had to strip off was the “what ifs”. What if I can’t do it? What if one of my grandchildren gets hurt etc… I had to strip those thoughts off as well. I decided, as I trusted God and His strength, I could/would also trust Him to keep everyone safe and give me ideas to keep them happy and engaged. It worked! Getting rid of bad thoughts leaves room for God’s creativity and faith to flow. It is amazing how helpful the Holy Spirit is when we allow Him to be!

Is there an area that you need to change your perspective? The word “strip” means to “leave bare of all accessories or fittings”. There is a definite, deliberate action required and implied in the meaning. What do you need to “strip” from your life? Take action, today.

3. The Holy Spirit’s job is to convict us of sin. This is one area we usually run away from, or try to cover up. When we strip off the weights, what is left will be revealed. The sins of pride, envy, jealousy or gossip show up. Unbelief, fear or immaturity are uncovered, and need to be dealt with. He does this because He loves us, not to shame or discredit us. There is so much freedom that comes when we repent and start afresh.

4. Then we must run…. with endurance. This means we hold our ground when we battle headwinds. The enemy of our soul will fight against our running. He does not want us to run, much less win. Making sure once we strip off the weights, we add on His armor. This armor, instead of weighing us down, will actually cause us to run with more purpose and win. It will help us bear up against any adversity we encounter.

5. Our associate pastor, Josh Hubbard, shared about “drafting” that running or cycling racers have learned about. Drafting, or “slipstreaming” is a technique that runners can use to save energy by running directly behind the lead runner. As I listened to his message, I thought about Jesus being our front runner. When we stay close to Him, we save energy. He knows the speed we need to run and has already mapped out our race. Besides Him, we follow those that are following Him and we can actually have the energy to run with endurance. Running alone is tiring, boring and leaves you more susceptible to wanting to quit. My dear friends, run with Jesus and His people. They will help you cross your finish line, and you can help them. Christians who burn out or quit their race often choose to “do it alone”. It is not the way God intended us to run. Find your team.

6. Keep your eye on the prize. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us. Philippians 3:14. NLT. Press on is another action word. It implies endurance, but also intention. It is a decision we must make. My brother-in-law has run many races. In order for him to run in a particular race, he decides and then registers, pays any fee involved and then shows up on race day at the appointed time and runs. If we want to run our race, we must also register by surrendering to Him. The cost is obedience to His will. It can seem high, but it is always worth it, if we keep our eye on the prize. Mike, my brother-in-law, has a wall full of awards and ribbons. Each representing the hard work he put in for training. There are some races that require certain qualifications, like the Boston Marathon. His number, his certificate and his ribbon have a special place on his wall, but compared to the prize we are running for, it is worth far less.

6. The Holy Spirit and God’s Word are both our trainer and our coach. Listen and apply their instruction and you will win your race as well. Please do not get discouraged. Keep running your race. Drink fully of His living water. Come to me, all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28. Please remember in this race, we have quiet resting places and opportunities to get replenished. If you are growing discouraged, take time to talk with Him. Share your concerns and then take HIS yoke upon you. Let HIM teach you, because HE is humble and gently at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For HIS yoke is easy to bear, and the burden HE gives you is light. (I capitalized the changes I made in substituting His for the scriptural I/my).

My friends, I know I have not always run with my eye on the prize, or with the thought of winning. I look back and see my running was more like a slug, crawling along on my belly. But, by God’s grace, He has always helped me come back from distractions and get rid of any added weights because I asked for His help. Don’t let our enemy rob you of the joy of running in this race. There is nothing like being a part of His team. He will show you how to fit your “life” into His race. You have the time and ability to run the race He has laid out for you, and do it well.

Father, please help us keep our eyes fixed on You and the prize set before us. Forgive us for trying to run with extra weights and even the sin that so easily trips us up. I thank you for teaching us how to run our particular race, in Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and “Learning”

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9 NIV.

Last year I taught science to three elementary girls. We studied underwater creatures God made. It was a fun and we all learned a lot of information. But, how fun it was for me, the teacher to hear that these students, when at the beach actually remembered what I taught them. There parents asked them “where did you learn this?” “Miss Martha, taught us!”. These girls actually learned the subject well enough to share it with their parents. I was humbled and blessed! Philippians 4:9 has Paul encouraging all of us to not only gain information, but be able to apply it! This is quite the statement our big brother Paul wrote. I have been thinking about the difference between being taught something and actually learning it! When we actually “learn” something, it becomes a part of us. When needed, we can apply it to our lives.

This past week, I faced a spiritual battle. I am sure I am not alone in this battle. It happens frequently. The “battle” challenged and tested whether I have actually “learned” to capture my thoughts, or just know the concept! So when Paul instructs us to put into practice everything we have learned, received or even heard from him—it is a lot!

If we just apply his instructions in the book of Philippians, can be daunting. However, my friends, we don’t have to do it alone. I am so grateful we have the Holy Spirit. He really is the teacher extra-ordinaire! Our church has been focusing on running our race, but doing it to win. As I faced this battle this week, I felt the Holy Spirit reminding me that I could win this battle. It seemed much easier to give in and let my thoughts run amuck, but I kept at it, bringing them subject and not only did freedom come, but peace prevailed.

That is the promise we find in Paul’s encouragement. If we give thanks for our brothers and sisters, as he did in Philippians 1: 3 (every time I think of you, I give thanks to my God. Whenever I pray, I make my requests for all of you with joy….), we won’t be so frustrated with them. If we believe, as he states in Philippians 1: 5, that he who began the good work with you will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns, we won’t be so frustrated with ourselves. Then peace will reign in our hearts.

Paul strongly exhorts us “do not be intimated in anyway by your enemies”. Philippians 1:28. That is powerful advice, if we not only read it, but apply it! I don’t know about you, but intimidation is anything by peaceful! Later in Philippians 4, Paul writes about two women who struggled in getting along. He asked others to help them settle there disagreement, so peace could be restored. He goes on to say in verse 6: don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace which exceeds anything we can understand. I encourage you to break this verse apart. Decide not to worry, but pray about those things which concern you. Don’t stop there, take the time to thank him for what he has done, and for what he is going to do in the situation that troubles you. Peace will come.

Today, I just want to remind us to allow the Holy Spirit to help you take His truths and get them past our heads and into our hearts. Everything He has us to learn is going to add to our peace. When we are at peace, we see things more clearly. Faith flows easier and we can run our race to win. Capturing unruly thoughts is one way we can walk in His peace. My friends, becoming a student of God’s Word will lead to more freedom. Become not only a learner, but a doer of His Word. It is good for you and it will be good for those around you.

Father, I thank you for your grace and mercy. I thank you for helping us not just know about Your truth, but apply it. Help apply everything we are learning, that we can be an example to others, in Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Gifts

Therefore, it says, when he ascended on high he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men. Ephesians 4:8 ESV

This is my birthday week. I turned 75…seems old when I think it is 3/4 of a century, but when I think my oldest sister turns 95 this year, I am young. Usually, with birthdays, gifts come. This year my daughter blessed me with “pets” as a glass fishbowl and the pets were glass underwater creatures that hang from clear globes! It is quite ingenious and the best sort of “pet” for someone like me, who enjoys the freedom of coming and going without the concern of animals. They are pretty and remind me of the aquariums my husband Darryl used to keep, without all the work.

I didn’t expect this gift, but it was given. I found a place to put them (yes, she gave me two!) and they make me smile. Some gifts I have received over the years are nice to be remembered, but not always kept in sight or eventually make their way to others (or a thrift store). These “pets” are not necessarily life changing, but because my daughter gave them, they are precious. I know the giver, therefore, I value the gift more.

As pondered gift giving, gift receiving and gift retaining, I thought about the best gift giver yet–our Lord! A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. I Corinthians 12:7. NLT. So each of us have been given at least one gift from God to help others. This is not just for ourselves, but it is to help the whole body of Christ. Paul elaborates on these gifts: To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another and to someone else, the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. HE alone decides which gift each person should have. I Corinthians 12: 3-11. I would like to ask you–have you been given one of these gifts? Are you using them? Or are they stuck in a drawer?

Maybe you say I don’t know about that list. I can’t say I have one of those? Pray, ask the Lord to show you the gift you have been given. But if you are a believer you have already received your first gift, the gift of salvation. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God. Ephesians 2:8 ESV. So I must ask, what are you doing with this gift of salvation? Are you becoming a disciple of Jesus? Is this gift activated in your life? Or does it sit in the drawer as maybe your Bible? I pray not. This is the most precious gift, bought with a very heavy price tag, the death of God’s own Son. Don’t take it for granted.

Romans 12:6-8, Paul reiterates some of the same gifts the body of Christ has been given, but then he adds a few others. In this grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly. I think we can all find something in this list He has given us to do. Oh my friends, God needs you to use your gifts. Do not hide them under a bushel, or in a drawer or in selfishness, but dust them off and use them. I have a feeling, each of us wants other people to use their gifts for our benefit–it works both ways. Start sowing your gift and see what happens!

God gave His body these gifts for a reason. He very carefully tells us why they have been given, so we can’t be confused! The KJV says it like this: For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ. Ephesians 4:12. Perhaps churches struggle to grow and develop ministries and leaders because we don’t want to be “perfected”, built up and do the work of the ministry. We may settle for babyhood, instead of maturity. My friends, God’s plan is for us to grow and develop and become pillars in His house. Many want nothing built on them, maybe because they struggle with fear and feeling of inadequacy because the teachers who were supposed to teach them have abandoned their posts.

Spend time with your Lord. Ask Him to show you where and how He wants you to serve in His body. If you need teaching, ask Him to show you what to do about it. Talk with your pastor or elders. They would love to help you. Submit to His ways and He will lead and guide you into all good paths. Paul told Timothy, “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands”. 2 Timothy 1:6. ESV. Or, as the KJV says, “Stir up the gift.” I am imploring you to fan your gift today. Your pastor and church need you to function in your gifting. This will make our God smile. Perfection is not a prerequisite, willingness to submit to authority is and have a teachable spirit is.

Remember when Jesus said the field are white and ready for harvest? He then asked them to pray for laborers? We are those laborers the world needs. Your mother needs, your grandchild needs, your aunt or uncle needs that you have been praying for… Open those gifts you have been given. You will be glad you did. I discovered some prophetic words my husband gave in August 2007 to Joy Church Medford (then Joy Christian Fellowship). What a delight it was to read them and know they have come to pass, above and beyond our expectations. God’s Word releases momentum and hope. If we don’t speak it, it may still happen, but with much more effort. God’s Word speaking through Darryl, increased faith and vision for that House. Don’t silence His Voice through you. It doesn’t have to be prophetic. Often a word of encouragement or appreciation can do the same thing.

Father, I thank you, that You are willing to trust us with Your precious gifts. I ask that you release teachers to Your body who will help equip, perfect and strengthen Your body now. Help us stir up the gifts of those around us, by our own obedience, In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and My Thankfulness

God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, having all sufficiency in all things may have abound in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:8 KJV

This summer has been a challenge on so many levels. I think it was about April when I thought about the joy of being with family, doing picnics and summer fun at the beach, etc. However, during May our family was hit with my daughter in laws cancer diagnosis. It took us all a while to process the news, deal with the treatment stages, and begin a rhythm of grace to work together to help. My sister Mary was finishing up her cancer treatment, so I sort of thought I knew the routine. But every body is different, every treatment is customized and Becca’s cancer was a different kind, even though in the same area.

I am so thankful for God’s grace. Every three weeks this summer, at least three of Andrew and Becca’s four children stayed overnight the day of surgery with me. A few other cousins joined us as well. We have had much laughter and made many memories. Their youngest child, now 14 months, Sofia, came and joined us at times as well. What I imagined as time together in April has actually happened, but in God’s own way.

In June, we added my oldest granddaughter to the mix as well. The plan was for Abby to stay at Andrew and Becca’s home during the recovery week and help with the kids. Not only did this bring added strength and help, but it gave us a chance to get to know her better as well. Becca’s sister and parents live next door to them, and we mingled strength and encouragement and grew the two families closer together. All of us are grateful we can team up to help each other—even with some new challenging diagnosis’ facing her dad. Again, not our perfect world plan, but God truly works out all things for not only His good, but ours.

As I write this, I think back on how during this time, my smelly, rotting backroom was transformed into a beautiful office space for me. I now have two guest rooms available for company. The joy of watching the cousins grow closer has been amazing. My daughter Elizabeth ran “Theater Camp” a couple of weeks ago, so another granddaughter joined the mix. She was here for 11 days. Getting to know her as a 16-year-old has also been a joy. Abby was here 58 days (she counted, I didn’t!) They left yesterday. The house is quiet, but my heart is full of memories. We still have one more chemo session for Becca next week. The grandkids will spend more time with me, with maybe a few other cousins thrown in, and we will have fun. We will make it. She then faces surgery, infusions and maybe radiation, but God, who has been faithful with His abundant grace, will help carry us through.

I turn 75 next week. My body is tired, but my heart is full. This week I had to replace my washing machine. An unexpected expense, but due to God’s faithfulness and His grace, I could get a new one. I know He will provide for the other things on my list (brakes, eye appointments and new glasses etc.), because of His abundant grace. This has not been an idyllic perfect time. I have gotten short with my grandchildren, frustrated over menu and food decisions and they have missed their folks; but working together and keeping our eye on the prize has made it not only doable, but enjoyable.

My friends, I am so thankful for His abundant grace. What are you facing? He can make all grace abound toward you this very day. It doesn’t matter what you are facing, He will make a way for you. Though this summer has been challenging, it has also been life changing. I realized I developed stamina to run my life’s race in areas I needed it, because I had to. Leaning on Him and His faithfulness when I have felt weak is exactly what I needed to do. He is more than able, my friends. Keep trusting Him.

Father, I thank you that you truly do know how much we can bear and do. I thank you for the other team members you have brought in to help us. Your grace is amazingly abundant when we allow it to be! My “help me Lord” prayers have been answered so well, and I simply thank you. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and God Ordered Steps

Ponder the path of your feet, then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left, turn your foot away from evil. Proverbs 4:26,27. ESV.

To prepare for moving my office from its old spot to the new room, I went through a lot of papers. Many memories surfaced as I found old teachings and writings by both Darryl and myself, old birthday cards with encouragement and lots of paperwork. In the midst, I found this prophetic word Darryl shared with the then Lighthouse Christian Center (now Life Church) in 2007. I felt the thoughts shared by the Holy Spirit are still relevant today. The words are italicized.

Ponder the path of your feet. The decisions you make today will determine the place you find yourself tomorrow. Too many times, my people do not consider the results of their actions. They live for today as though no tomorrow will come. They are too short-sighted. Learn to weigh out carefully in prayer the things that you do and do not do. Acknowledge me in all your ways and I will direct your paths. My wisdom is perfect. I see the end from the beginning. Often, you only see the things that are right in front of you, and then you make choices based on your likes and dislikes, your goals, your opinions. But I see all things. I know all things, and I want to direct you as I see and know. The wisdom that I give will lead to the ways of life. The ways that man figures out for himself have no such guarantee.

Stop and quiet yourself before me. Practice listening for my wisdom. Learn to be directed by my leading. Don’t be a reactionary to your circumstance, but learn to take action based on my directions. Life is complicated for those who have not found my wisdom. It makes no sense, and it is confusing to those who do not know my counsel.

But it is not to be so for my people. You are to know my wisdom, my counsel. I will lead you in the ways of peace as you follow my instructions. So wait up! Stop running around in circles as though there were no help from your God.

The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. Are your steps ordered by the Lord? Or do you have any idea of what steps the Lord has for you to take? Many of my people are wandering uncertain of where they are going, not aware of where they are in reference to where I desire them to be. They have lost their way by making choices based on their own ways rather than my ways. It is time to stop this. I am calling my people to come and get back on track. I want to realign their hearts with my heart. I want to renew them in the simplicity of following their shepherd, instead of following their nose. Too many of my people are stuck in the thickets of this world’s illusions, this world’s perspectives, this world’s likes and dislikes. I want to rescue them. I want to give them again a sense of destiny, and an understanding of how to fulfill it. My people are not to pattern themselves after the ways of this world. What is it getting them? It will not get you any better. But my ways are perfect, and as you learn to delight in my instructions, they will cause you to inherit the kind of life this world can never give you.

Be careful. Walk softly before me. Don’t be hasty in your own spirit. Learn to wait before me. Let me direct your life into good things. Do this, and I will change your life from one that is coming at you with press and stress, to a life that is going into the good future that I have in reserve for you in strength and peace.

What a wonderful reminder about how much our God cares about the path we are on. Psalm 16:11 declares I will show you the path of life. Isn’t it amazing how much He understands us and wants to intervene to help us walk in His peace? Please take the time to ponder your path, but also this word. I think it has nuggets for all of us.  Do not let the enemy cause you doubt your ability to hear His direction. He loves to direct the paths of His children. Wait patiently before Him, fill your mind with His Word and worship. He will show you what direction He has for you to go. Release your faith, thank Him for the direction. If you are still struggling, talk to your pastor or leader. They can help you, especially if you are new to listening and following.

Father, I thank you for Your Words of life. The wisdom in this word is still applicable to us today, seventeen years later. As we wait upon You, I thank you for refreshing, renewing and re-directing our steps even more aligned with Your Will and Your Way. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Straight Paths

In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:6 ESV.

Sometimes, even with the best intentions, our paths are not straight. Twenty or more years ago, my husband lay new flooring in our son’s bedroom. It looked amazing when he finished, and we all rejoiced. However, unknown to me and I assume him, there was a problem. Unbeknownst to either of us, two major flaws would create a very big headache down the road for me. The room had a door that led to the outside, but there was no eave covering that door. Over the years, the rain caused the door to deteriorate, and the house began to settle. I didn’t realize it at the time, but dampness began to erode the subfloor through the door casing. Not only that, but moisture was continually wicking up from the concrete to the subfloor as well. Long after Darryl passed away, this room became my private nightmare.

At first, I lived in denial. I kept the door shut, and with life happening, I tried to forget the problem. The room felt damp, so I borrowed a dehumidifier, and it worked for a while. Then I found earthworms crawling around inside the room! Denial was definitely not working. My friend Bill came to visit to fix issues in my bathroom. Tiles were loose in the bathtub area and we discovered mildew and rot 1/2 up the wall! I was so blessed as those areas were fixed and celebrated as this load was lifted. In Bill’s last days of visiting, he replaced the outside door, but unfortunately didn’t have time to put the trim back, so I thought we are good, I don’t have to worry about the room now. But inwardly, I knew it probably wasn’t really fixed, so I asked many handyman/contractors if they would come and check it out. But none of them had the time or inclination to do what I described as a minor job. Our friend David Freeman also fixed one moldy area. We celebrated, thinking things were finally fixed. But alas, it wasn’t enough.

Years went by and I knew we still had a problem. I kept praying, asking the Lord for help. I knew this room needed help before it affected the rest of the house. This past December, I asked a young contractor from our church if he would come and check it out. To my joy, he accepted the challenge! So much demolition took place to fix the problem that began years before. Apparently there was not enough or the right vapor barrier installed when Darryl put in the subfloor. Over the years, the wood absorbed moisture from the concrete. It took a while for the dampness to work its damage. It reminds me of the subtleness of sin…causing death in increments!

I had to move from denial to acknowledgement. It was hard. I think it is the same with our personal weaknesses. We try to cover up the problem. (I used a lot of damp rid, tea tree oil and baking soda!) But these only delayed the right solution. I finally told Ryan, my contractor, “we have to do whatever it takes to remedy the problem.” It was devastating to watch the deconstruction. I realized part of my delay was having to admit that Darryl might have made a mistake when he put the floor in. He was long gone, so I couldn’t ask him. I couldn’t remember what or how it was done. All I knew was we were in a mess. I had to forgive him for leaving me this mess! Ryan used his knowledge and experience to make sure we did not have a repeat of the situation.

He took out the door and replaced it with a slider. He tore out the outside brick siding after he discovered there was no vapor barrier between it and the wall to prevent continued dampness wicking in. We polished and sealed the now exposed concrete so no more water damage can occur. It took him several months and ate into some of his other job commitments because there was so much more work that we expected we had to do. He told me upfront he didn’t tape, mud, or d0 finish work. I appreciate every bit of his expertise, time and energy he spent on this project. I am grateful for God’s provision to cover the labor and expenses.

I had to figure out the next step. The damage was corrected, but the room was still not usable. More prayer and crying out for His help. A new fellow, Kenny, started attending my daughter’s life group. He was a handyman/contractor needing work. He was God’s provision, along with Becca’s dad and sister, who painted the interior. My grand girls painted the new exterior and last Saturday, we re-located my office. It is so bright and amazing. You would never know its previous state.

Friends, is there any area in your life where denial is trying to cover up areas of damage? Emotional? Spiritual? Or even physical? We often follow Adam and Eve’s cover up plan, don’t we? Maybe it’s shame or fear that keeps us from acknowledging the true situation. Part of my fear had to do with I didn’t know what to do. Ignorance and fear of the unknown costs or hiring the wrong person who would take advantage of that ignorance helped me delay dealing with the situation. I am so grateful for God’s prodding to deal with the mess. It took courage and ownership to look at how bad it really was to keep seeking solutions. The emotional cost of living with the fear of the unknown was worse than the truth of the situation. I am free from that fear and it is wonderful.

As I leaned into Him, He led me to the straight path of correction. He does that with our soul as well. Acknowledging Him in this situation was the best thing I could ever do. Listening to the Holy Spirit prompts, no matter in what area, always pays off. The sooner we respond, the better and easier it will be. Learning to listen in the physical can help train our understanding of spiritual and emotional ways as well.

Father, thank you for helping us walk on your straight paths. I am so grateful you knew how to help bring solutions to this overwhelming (to me) situation. I ask you to help us learn how to acknowledge you in every path, not just the overwhelming ones. Your ways are always best. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Contentment

Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. Philippians 4:11. NLT.

Pastor Josh Hubbard preached from this verse this past Sunday and it stirred my heart. To me it is one of those “re-setting” verses in the Bible that remind me of not only whose I am, but also life’s processes. Paul makes it clear that contentment is a learned attribute and is attainable.

Most definitions of biblical contentment include the state of being satisfied, at peace, and emotionally fulfilled with what one has or the circumstance one finds themselves in.. I don’t know about you, but I definitely move in and out of the state of contentment. Tuesday, we celebrated Eva Bunica’s 83 birthday. She is my daughter in law’s aunt, and I have known her for fourteen years. She has had many struggles in her life. She grew up in Romania under Communist rule. It was very difficult to be a believer during that era. But it was the religious persecution that God used to bring her and ultimately her brother’s family to the United States. Over the years, as we have talked, it was clear that it took the Holy Spirit time to heal and restore her from fear and anxiety they lived under. Their bodies were free, but their souls needed His restoration. I think it would be right to say, it took awhile for them to be content in a new country as well.

This has not been an easy year for her. Many health issues and a surprise needed pacemaker are only a part of her challenges. But there is a new peace and I would have to add contentment to her. We spent some time quietly talking, and she actually quoted this verse. She said, “I’ve learned to be content” about everything in my life. He is with me, so why not? As we talked she shared how she spent time with the Lord and during that time, her attitude was changed. Her outward situation didn’t. But she did. I think that is what Paul was trying to convey with Philippians 4: 12-13. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

Contentment has to do with our perspective and attitude, not our circumstances. It involves capturing those thoughts that would run to fear, anxiety, doubt or unbelief. It is choosing faith over those things, with knowing God is in charge, not you. So no matter what you face, He is there with His purpose and plan.

I Timothy 6:6 For godliness with contentment is great gain (or wealth).

Hebrews 13:5 Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, “I will never fail you. I will never abandon you. So we can say with confidence. The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me.

Learning to be content is something our teacher, the Holy Spirit longs to teach each of us. Young moms struggling with toddler tantrums and nap refusals may find it difficult to feel contentment. I remember those days, but I found contentment in knowing that I was in my calling. It was my assignment to help those little humans to learn about life. My contentment was in His purpose. I also regularly cried out for His wisdom on how to do it!

Abiding in Christ’s contentment does not mean we can not or should not have an ambition for change. Seeking Him for His changes often comes from a place of peace where we can hear His voice. It is harder to find His leadings when we are in the midst of chaos and turmoil in our own souls. When we are contented we stop complaining and start to enjoy our life, even while believing for that promotion or relationship to show up!

Take time to reflect on your current circumstance. Are you content? Or are you striving? Are you looking for something to change so you can “be happy”? You haven’t arrived at the state of contentment yet. It is amazing how our faith is tied in with contentment. When we are “content” faith is much more easily released than when we are discontent. Grumbling, complaining and irritation block joy and faith. Gratitude, thankfulness and peace flow from a contented person. So what is your contentment level? My friends, do not be afraid to check it. If you realize you need to grow in this area, simply ask Him. Sitting in His Presence worshipping is a great way to start. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Hebrews 12:1-3. NLT It comes down again, to keeping our focus on Him, not ourselves or our circumstances. Discontentment comes from giving in to the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh or the pride of life. Listening to lies about how we aren’t good enough, or why do they have this or that does not lead to contentment. It takes practice to keep our eyes focused on Him. If they drift away, repent and start again. It gets easier and easier with practice. We do not have to live lives with nagging thoughts plaguing us. That never was His plan.

Father, I ask you to teach us how to live in the state of contentment. Reveal areas of our soul where we struggle to find peace in Your will and Your way. Help us to trust Your plan in every area of our lives, In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Rest

Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength, but you would have none of it. Isaiah 30:15 NLT.

As I have been reading through the book of Isaiah, I have been struck by how far God’s people have strayed from His purpose and plan. But even though He gave them rich and wonderful promises, they refused to listen. God has told his people, there is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. There is a quiet rest, but they would not listen. Isaiah 28:12. NLT.

I actually thought, “how can you be so dumb!”. You traded your powerful, amazing God for the idols of your neighboring countries. You thought idols of wood and stone, along with pagan worship practices, would bring your freedom and life, but you were so wrong. But then I thought about myself. Do I access God’s rest and promises in the fullness that I can or should?
Life has been busy and, if I can admit it, a bit stressful lately. I need to trust His promises even more than ever. A couple of weeks ago, I woke up with vertigo. I felt like a drunken sailor. My furniture placement proved helpful in navigating to the bathroom because I needed its stability! My dear daughter -in- law Becca came over and did some kind of blood pressure test to make sure it wasn’t anything serious, but I had to rest.

I realize I am not very good at resting. Someone asked me today about my Sabbath. Hmmm, I try to plan it usually on Fridays, but it hasn’t been happening lately. So when the dizziness re-appeared today, I was forced to retreat to my bed and rest. Both the end of the scripture in Isaiah 28:12 and 30:15 tell the Israelites that there is an opportunity to rest, but they “would not.” I think we are not much different than they were–we want the “rest” but we want it on our terms.

Psalm 23:1-2 The Lord is my shepherd, I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. Is He my shepherd? Am I allowing Him to lead and guide me to those peaceful, restful places? I have to admit, not like I used to. Dehydration can cause all kinds of symptoms. My water intake has been noticeably reduced, which can lead to vertigo. So, I am back to focusing on water, rest and food! I don’t want to be like the Israelites “who would not” take advantage of God’s wisdom.

This morning I sat and read Isaiah 40-44. Such amazing words of life are in these passages. These are sections that promise a wonderful Savior is coming, and we know who He is. We get to walk and rest with Him, if we don’t get too busy doing our own thing. Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Isaiah 40:28. Sometimes, we as believers act like we have never heard of Him!

Yes, this is our God. The one we get to walk with. Are you feeling weak or frail? Not just your body, but in your soul? Take the time to wait on and with Him. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary, They will walk and not faint. Isaiah 40: 33. This is our promise my friends, but it will only happen if we allow Him to lead and guide us to those resting places. He has them prepared for you, but you must take the time to enter into His rest. Fretting, worrying, fear, anxiety are not found in His presence. Remember, this next verse is not just something to quote, but something to actually learn to walk out. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4: 6-7. During this busy, stressful time, not only did I neglect hydration, I did not take the time to bring all my requests to the Lord. I thought I was, but as I wrote out that scripture, I recognized I was just carrying them in my head and not casting them off to Him. Maybe I am not the only one?

Father, I thank you for teaching us how to enter into Your rest. I thank you for forgiving us for not letting You be our Shepherd and trying to run our own lives. Help us re-set today and start anew. In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Refuge

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in trouble. Psalm 46:1. NLT

This past February I got the joy of being invited to go to Disneyland with my daughter, Elizabeth and her family. Through God’s amazing and various provisions, the seven of us planned and anticipated this adventure. It just so happened that our planned Disney days took place during some of the heaviest rains Anaheim had experienced in years! The heavens opened and the streets literally became rivers. There are no “refunds for rainy days” at Disneyland. It is go or lose your money! The storms of life are like that too–there is no getting away from them.

The other day, I felt overwhelmed as I prayed for some of my friends and family situations. They face challenges for their families that break my heart. It caused a sort of “soul storm” in my emotions. I wanted to run away from those challenges, but in reality, I needed a refuge from them. A place of safety where I could sort through my emotions, rather than hiding from them. Have you ever experienced that? You want to run away. That is when we have a choice. We can either run to God, or run to our hobbies, food, alcohol, or other distractions. As I made the choice (this time!) to run to Him, not only did peace come, but so did faith. As I released this faith in prayer, I knew God not only had their problems but also them. I was able to intercede for them with greater faith.

The Hebrew word for “refuge” in this verse is machseh. It means a shelter, refuge, protection, or fortress. It also includes the idea of a hope and a place of trust; and the obvious: a shelter from storms. When we run to Him as a refuge, hope must come. Are you struggling with any storms or troubles in your life? Do you feel battered and bruised? God is waiting for you to go to Him. It is always available, but if we don’t access it, we won’t have it.

Sometimes, as I seek His refuge, I just sit in His Presence. I might turn on worship music or sit in silence, slowly focusing on Him, not the storms. Gradually, as I sit there I feel strengthened because He is not just a God who provides refuge, He is a God who wants to strengthen us to not just hide from our troubles, but learn how to face them victoriously.

After the sitting and “catching my breath” phase, I then begin to share with Him about the situation. It is not to give Him the information–for, of course He already knows it, but often as I share clarity comes. I begin to be able to sort out the difference between my feelings and the facts of the situation. Many times this is when the thread of solution begins to open up. Psalm 62:8 encourages us: Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. We find David, in Psalm 142:2-3 declaring I pour out my complaints before him and tell him all my troubles. When I am overwhelmed, you alone know the way I should turn. He found it solace in sharing with the Lord all his thoughts–including his complaints. If you have never verbalized your thoughts and feelings out loud, try it. It may sound silly to say, but it makes a difference, especially hearing your own words and thoughts. Praying audibly is a valuable tool for your tool belt.

This is a reminder that we all can have access to His refuge. Don’t try to live through your storms without a shelter. Go to Him. Ask Him for His strength, insight and wisdom in dealing with every trouble you are facing. Jesus left us some encouraging and comforting but tough words to hear in John 16: Jesus asked, “Do you finally believe? But the time is coming–indeed it’s here now–when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me along. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. John 16:31-33. NLT. I think the sooner we learn how to abide in the shelter of the Almighty (Psalm 91:1) and not be surprised that we have many trials and sorrows, the sooner we receive His strength and help with those trials and sorrows.

When we abide in His refuge, He often reminds us to put on His armor, to cast our cares or to remember we can do all things through Christ who does in fact strengthen us! I have never lived in “tornado alley”, but I imagine those folks prepare, and prepare well, because they know storms are inevitable. We can learn to prepare for the troubles we face as well. Remember, you are not alone. He is with you. Are you prepared?

Father, thank you for your provision from our storms and trials. We can take heart that we can overcome the with Your strength and help. Teach us to turn quickly to you in our times of distress, instead of living outside the protection You have provided for us, In Jesus’ Name, amen.

Faith and Fresh Trust

Unless your faith is firm, I cannot make you stand firm. Isaiah 7:9b. NLT.

I read this portion of scripture a few days ago, and it struck me quite hard. The NKJV says “If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established…”. As I have been walking through life’s challenges this past week, I realized, God is working in our hearts to help is stand strong in Him, His Word and His Ways. It is time my friends, to refresh your trust in Who HE Is!

It seems life has been more challenging for more people lately. It is like one of those video games where you start out on a easy level where things are at a slower pace and you can keep up. Then as you move up more levels, the enemy is firing more often with even stronger fire balls at you. For me, I get overwhelmed and quit. Which is an easy thing to do, because it is a game. Life not so much. Many of my friends are facing extremely difficult decisions about how to do life, financially, emotionally and spiritually. They are struggling, but standing. I have been praying for them, a lot! My trust in Him and His ways is either firm, or it isn’t. The good news is that God understands our shaky ways, and He has a plan.

Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are fearful-hearted, be strong do not fear! Behold your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God; He will come and save you. Isaiah 35: 3-4. NKJV Do your knees need to be strengthened? Are they feeling a bit feeble? I want to encourage you to cling to the Lord. Whatever you are facing, He will help you. He will show up and in His time the battle will be over. At times, during my own struggles, I think what would Jesus do if He were here? He would stand and win. Then I remember, He is here, fighting for me and with me. I can rest in Him, even during the fight!

Maybe your battle is with yourself. It happens. My advice? Just surrender to Him and His will, tell Him your struggles and lean in to Him. Surround yourself with believers who can help strengthen those weaker areas. But it really is up to each of us, to either choose to trust Him and His ways or not. To allow the fruit of the Spirit to be cultivated in our hearts versus allowing the works of the flesh to reign. Ask for prayer and counseling. Listen to it and apply it. Take courage from the testimony of others. I have never found Him lacking, myself yes, Him, never. I encourage myself with Paul’s many trials that are listed in 2 Corinthians. I haven’t been beaten, stoned, shipwrecked or thrown into prison for my faith. If he can do it and stay strong in his faith, I can go through my trials and tests, and so can you.

Maybe it is time for you to refresh your trust in the Who you are trusting. Don’t wait another day. Make the time to spend quality time in His Presence. You will find your hands strengthened, your knees firmed up and with a new resolve that life is doable. It is easy to forget, in the middle of so many battles, that we have a Savior, but we do! Answers to your prayers may take time, but fellowship with Him can happen at any time. And during the fellowship of our sufferings we can come to know Him in a deeper manner. Enduring hard things is part of what life is about. It is so much easier doing those hard things together with Him, than alone.

We must take time to consider, “do we want to grow stronger in our faith and trust, or do we just want to complain about our struggles?” God’s help is always available, but there are times when people resist His help. That is part of the reason Isaiah wrote “unless your faith is firm, I cannot make you firm”, again, it is our choice. My friends, choose Him, it’s always worth it.

Father, I thank you for renewing and refreshing our trust in Who you are. I thank you that as we read Your Word, we can discover You and Your Ways and they are good. I ask you to strengthen those who are feeling weak and feeble today. Send Your Word of encouragement to them, In Jesus’ Name, amen.
